Independence Day and National Prayer Day in Zambia 2026: What to Expect

Two of Zambia's biggest national gatherings fall in the same fortnight. National Prayer Day is on Sunday 18 October 2026 at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, and Independence Day is on Saturday 24 October 2026.
National Prayer Day — 18 October
Government declares a half-day public holiday for National Prayer Day. Believers gather at National Heroes Stadium for an inter-denomination service with hymns, national leadership addresses and prayer for the country.
It is one of the few genuinely national events in Lusaka — the crowd draws from every province, not just the capital, and transport into the city is heavily loaded that morning.
Planning around it
- Public transport services typically wind down around midday once the service concludes.
- If you have afternoon plans, arrange a return journey before the service ends rather than after.
- National Heroes Stadium is on Independence Avenue; expect heavy congestion on the surrounding arterial roads.
Independence Day — 24 October
Independence Day carries the military parade at State House, school cadet processions, cultural troupes and vintage vehicle displays through the morning, then street parties into the afternoon and evening.
Where activity concentrates
- Morning: State House and the parade route in the civic centre
- Daytime: street parties, cultural performances and food vendors along the parade route
- Evening: street party clusters around the Kabwata market strip and other open areas, with DJ sound systems
Road closures
Road closures begin around 06:00 for the parade. If you are driving across Lusaka on 24 October, plan your route as if the civic centre is closed — the Independence Avenue and Cairo Road corridors are the ones to avoid.
The practical advice locals use: lodge within walking distance of where you need to be, or budget for a bicycle taxi (kabaza) rather than relying on cars that cannot get through.
What to eat and expect at the street parties
Independence Day street parties in Lusaka are a food event as much as a music event. Expect roasted maize, kapata, nshima with village chicken, beef stew, chitenge and cold drinks. Music runs from Zamrock and old-school highlife through to contemporary Afrobeat and dancehall sound systems that do not shut until late.
Two weekends, two very different crowds
Prayer Day is a formal, family-heavy national occasion — bring church attire and expect a long, orderly day. Independence Day street parties are informal, younger and later-running. If you are planning travel, they are not interchangeable.
Where else to be in October
If you are in Lusaka for the 24th, the surrounding fortnight is packed: Africa Tech-Xpo (26–27 Oct), Power & Elec Zambia and the Zambia Pharma & Healthcare Expo (28–30 Oct), and the Power Dynamos vs Nkana Kitwe derby (31 Oct).
